In September 2024, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder rose across Nigeria, with some states experiencing steeper price increases than others.

According to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the South-East has the highest average price for a 12.5kg cylinder at N16,957.29, South-West is the second highest regional price at

N16,665.45 while North-East has the Lowest regional price at N15,770.75.

The 12.5kg Cylinder rose by 4.89% month-on-month (from August to September 2024) and by 76.41% year-on-year, up from N9,247.40 in September 2023.

Smaller households also feel the pinch, as the cost of a 5kg cylinder has increased by 4.19% month-on-month and 59.9% year-on-year.

Here are the top ten states where cooking costs are currently the highest,

Rivers – N17,992.86

Rivers topped the list, with residents paying the highest average price for a 12.5kg cylinder in Nigeria. This sharp increase reflects a national trend of rising cooking gas costs.

Gombe – N17,942.86

Following closely behind Rivers, Gombe households are also facing high prices, which is affecting household budgets.

Zamfara – N17,475.00

Zamfara ranks third with another steep price point, illustrating the financial strain across various regions.

Anambra – N17,291.67

Residents in Anambra are paying prices similar to the top three states, contributing to a higher cost of living.

Edo – N17,271.88

Edo state has seen gas prices climb, now placing it among the top five.

Osun – N17,159.09

Osun’s costs show the trend of rising prices, especially for basic household needs like cooking gas.

Enugu – N17,053.57

Enugu has joined the ranks of the highest-cost states for cooking gas, affecting both urban and rural households.

Imo – N17,011.76

In Imo, households are facing steep gas prices that have increased sharply over the past year.

Abuja – N17,001.25

Abuja residents are not immune to the climbing costs of cooking gas as they now pay N17,001 for 12.5kg.

Cross River – N16,965.63

Rounding out the top ten, Cross River’s high prices make cooking gas less affordable for many residents.
