Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer representing #EndBadGovernance protesters, announced on Thursday that lawyers from the Citizens’ Liberties Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have secured the release of six protesters in Kano.
The release was facilitated during the ongoing trial of the protesters in Kano.
According to Adeyanju, the NBA Civil Liberties Committee, chaired by Comrade Nuhu Egya and comprising prominent human rights activists, including himself, played a crucial role in securing the release.
The committee’s efforts are ongoing, with plans to meet the leadership of the judiciary and visit protesters in prison.
Kano State has witnessed the highest number of protester arrests, with over 1,000 detained by security agencies. However, almost 80 protesters have been granted bail recently. Adeyanju stated that the trial of other protesters has been adjourned until September 23, 2024.
In a related development, Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a senior lecturer at Baze University’s Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, was granted bail by the Sokoto State High Court after being held by the Department of State Security (DSS) for over three weeks for supporting #EndBadGovernance protesters.
Adeyanju expressed gratitude to the NBA leadership, the Citizens Liberties Committee, and the Sokoto Branch of the NBA for their support and intervention.
Adeyanju’s efforts highlight the importance of legal representation and advocacy in protecting the rights of protesters and ensuring justice is served.
