AI and Future of Software Engineering: What the next decade holds

Software engineering has always been about solving problems. From creating platforms that handle huge volumes of transactions to building applications that connect millions of people, engineers have always driven progress in technology. Now, Artificial Intelligence is changing everything. What used to be about writing exact instructions for computers is now becoming about designing systems that can learn, adapt, and improve on their own. The next ten years will transform not just how we work but also what it means to be a software engineer.

Israel Iyonsi, a Software Engineering Consultant at Kindred, has spent over a year creating strong systems for processing affiliate transactions for more than twenty partner networks including Admitad, Cuelinks, vCommission, Rakuten, and Dognet. His work includes designing ways to reprocess missing transactions, building reliable systems with error handling, and writing detailed scripts to check and confirm data accuracy. These experiences give him a clear view of how automation and AI are reshaping software engineering.

The first major shift Israel sees is automation. Artificial Intelligence is now transforming tasks that once took hours into processes that are completed in minutes. Debugging, testing, and reviewing code can now be handled with precision and speed using AI-powered tools. This does not mean that engineers will be replaced. Instead, their role will evolve. They will spend less time fixing repetitive errors and more time designing the architecture and strategic frameworks that guide intelligent systems. In Israel’s view, the value of engineers in the future will lie in creativity, problem solving, and the ability to design systems that can adapt and grow.

Despite these advances, the fundamentals of engineering remain essential. Writing clean code, building strong architectures, and understanding algorithms are the foundation of any great software system. Israel has seen firsthand how poorly structured systems make AI integration difficult and unreliable. Without solid foundations, even the most advanced AI cannot deliver meaningful results. This reinforces the need for engineers to maintain core technical skills even as they embrace new tools.

Ethics and accountability will also be key in the decade ahead. When financial systems rely on AI to detect fraud or assess risk, the decisions made by these systems can have profound consequences. Engineers must ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in how systems are designed. AI is not just a tool; it is increasingly a decision maker. Ensuring those decisions are trustworthy will be one of the greatest challenges for engineers.
