The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Dr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, highlighted the importance of partnerships between academic institutions and industries at the inaugural graduation of the “Telecom Access Foundation Programme.”

The event, held at the Skillfort training hub, saw 28 students receive certifications in RF & Microwave Technology, Fiber Optics Solutions, Network Optimization, Renewable Energy Solutions, and Quality Environmental Health and Safety.

Dr. Abdul emphasized the essential role of these alliances in producing graduates who are well-prepared to meet industry demands. He stated, “YABATECH is bridging the gap between academia and industry. The gown is going to the town to ensure our graduates are fit for the industry. We thank God for the actualization of our vision to create a robust industrial alliance that enhances student training.”

In addition to its commitment to industry readiness in Nigeria, YABATECH has also sent 25 students to China for an 18-month training programme in automobile engineering. Dr. Abdul explained, “Our efforts are aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring our graduates are globally competitive.”

Deputy Zonal Director of the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Dr. John Onyebuchi commended the initiative and encouraged the graduates to continue honing their skills. “Your continued upskilling will make you internationally acceptable and competitive in any part of the world,” he said.

Vice Chancellor of Summit University, Offa, Prof. Musa Aibinu expressed his appreciation for the shift towards combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. “With this combination, you become industry-fitted graduates, capable of making significant contributions wherever you go,” he stated.

Among the attendees was Managing Director of Omnicom Solutions, Faheed Olajide, who called for more collaborative efforts between corporate bodies and the tech industry. He also announced that Omnicom Solutions would retain some of the graduates and mentioned that other tech partners have shown interest in employing them.

Akinwale Akinyemi emerged as the overall best student, receiving three awards at the graduation ceremony. Speaking on behalf of the other graduates, Akinwale expressed profound gratitude to the management of Omnicom and Skillfort for their exposure to various aspects of the telecommunications industry through hands-on practical experiences, transport allowances, and competent lecturers with diverse knowledge in the field.
