ABUJA – The United Nations has officially adopted the oral statement of Silver Lining for the Needy Initiative (SLNI), a Nigerian non-governmental organization.

The adoption was announced at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) High-Level Political Forum in New York, where SLNI presented its oral statement on empowering communities through adult literacy.

SLNI’s oral statement aims to improve the standard of living of Nigerians, particularly children, youths, and women, by providing access to quality education.

The UN recognizes SLNI’s efforts to address poverty and inequality through education, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.

SLNI’s Founder and CEO, Hauwa Abbas, addressed the forum, highlighting the critical role of literacy in achieving the SDGs.

She also expressed gratitude for the adoption, saying it validates the organization’s dedication to empowering communities through literacy.

“Literacy transcends the ability to read and write; it is about empowering individuals to enhance their lives, access better employment opportunities, and actively participate in their society,” Ms Abbas said.

The adoption is expected to boost SLNI’s efforts to secure funding and partnerships to expand its literacy programmes in Nigeria.

With this recognition, SLNI’s impact is expected to grow, benefiting more Nigerians and contributing to the country’s sustainable development.

Meanwhile, the forum brought together UN member states, NGOs, and stakeholders to review progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
