Thousands of members from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Democratic Party (ADP) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
The PDP defectors, led by former local government scribe Alimi Surajudeen, cited partiality within the PDP as their reason for leaving. Surajudeen criticized the ruling party for favoring perceived family members and friends over those who had worked hard for the party.
“It is unfortunate to be in a party, work for it, yet feel no sense of belonging. The party operates within a circle of friends and family, neglecting the masses. I cannot align with such a party,” Surajudeen stated.
He added, “In Osun State, especially in Irewole, only those seen as family dominate, without giving others the opportunity to enjoy the dividends of democracy. I cannot belong to such a party.”
Surajudeen also highlighted his past role, saying, “I was a former Secretary of the local government during Oyinlola’s tenure. A political party should help the masses, not just a select group. When only 2 percent out of 100 benefit, it creates suffering and problems for the masses.”
Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways, welcomed the defectors in Ikire, Irewole Local Government. He said the defection shows that the APC is gaining traction and poised for a comeback in Osun by 2026.
“Since we left the government, the leadership of Adegboyega Oyetola has been steadfast. None of our members have defected to any other party, and today, we welcome 120 members from PDP, ADP, and TOP into the APC. In the next two or three months, even more will join. This shows that 2026 will be a success for the APC. We have recognized the defectors as members of our party and they will be treated well without discrimination,” Oyebamiji stated.
The APC Chairman in Osun State, Tajudeen Lawal, assured the defectors that they will not regret their decision to join the APC.
