Nile University of Nigeria held a landmark Inaugural Lecture, delivered by one of the Institution’s distinguished academics, Prof. Titilola Titilayo Obilade, titled “Health Messaging: Currency for Today, Savings for Tomorrow.” The Inaugural lecture marks a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and intellectual growth.

In his opening remarks at the event, the Vice Chancellor of Nile University, Prof. Dilli Dogo, highlighted the importance of the inaugural lecture series in enriching the existing body of knowledge and contributing to the intellectual advancement of the university community and policymakers. He stated, “This inaugural lecture marks the beginning of a series of intellectual engagements that will not only showcase the scholarly achievements of our esteemed faculty but also add significant value to the existing body of knowledge. It is a testament to our commitment to academic excellence and our dedication to addressing real-world challenges through rigorous academic inquiries, research and innovation.”

The inaugural lecture, which drew an audience of distinguished scholars, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and students, emphasized the pivotal role of effective health communication in promoting public health and preventing disease. Prof. Obilade’s insightful presentation drawn from her years of service in academia, and her contribution to global health and community service, highlighted how timely and accurate health messages serve as vital tools in the immediate fight against health crises and lay the foundation for long-term health improvements.

Prof. Obilade emphasized that health messaging, when effectively executed, acts as a “currency” that yields significant “savings” by preventing diseases, reducing healthcare costs, and improving overall community well-being. She discussed various strategies for crafting impactful health messages and the importance of leveraging modern communication technologies to reach diverse populations. Her lecture also touched on the critical need for collaboration among health professionals, communicators, and policymakers to ensure that health messages are both accurate and culturally relevant.

At the end of the inaugural lecture, participants had the opportunity to interact and engage with Prof. Obilade, exploring various aspects of health messaging and its implications for public health policy and practices.
