In a fervent appeal for unity and peace, Dr. Nelson Aluya, President of the Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee USA (NAPAC-USA), has issued a statement urging Americans to reject hate and violence in all forms. This call to action follows the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, highlighting the dangers of incendiary rhetoric.
“The attempted assassination of former President Trump underscores the destructive power of hateful rhetoric,” Dr. Aluya stated. “We must disavow hate in all its forms, both in speech and on social media, and work towards a more inclusive and respectful discourse.”
The history of political violence in America is troubling, with 15 direct assaults on U.S. presidents, presidents-elect, and presidential candidates, resulting in five deaths. Dr. Aluya emphasized the urgent need for peaceful and constructive participation in the political process, particularly within the African American community. “Our words have power, and divisive rhetoric can catalyze violence,” he noted. “We must tone down our language and embrace respectful dialogue and civil engagement.”
Dr. Aluya’s message also highlighted the importance of unity and the strength found in America’s diversity. He called on all citizens to come together to build a future founded on the principles of unity, respect, and unwavering commitment to democracy. “Let us create a society where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and every individual can thrive,” he urged. “We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation to choose to be the change we seek and work towards a just, equitable, and peaceful future for all.”
