A renowned product designer, Terrence Okafor has highlighted the crucial role of collaboration and competition in driving innovation in the tech industry.

He made this known in a press briefing recently, stating that while collaborations are essential drivers of innovation in the tech workspace, a competitive market is key in promoting the release of relevant updates and features.

According to him, “Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum but is a reflection of collaborative efforts and initiatives. Nigeria has world-class designers, developers and product managers creating amazing products for global companies. The government can get involved by sponsoring events to foster innovation and collaboration within the ecosystem, and creating more ICT centres.

“By working together, industry leaders, startups, and academia can facilitate knowledge sharing, resource pooling, and talent development, leading to the creation of new technologies and solutions.”

One of the most significant benefits of collaborations is the ability to leverage each other’s strengths and expertise. By working together, companies can develop solutions that cater to a wider range of needs and preferences.

“Collaborations allow companies to tap into each other’s expertise, leading to the creation of more effective and impactful solutions,” he added.

Furthermore, Okafor  firmly stated that leveraging initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion in the tech industry can also drive innovation. By bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, companies can develop solutions that are more innovative and effective.

“Diversity and inclusion are essential for driving innovation,” he emphasized. “When we bring together people from different backgrounds and perspectives, we can create solutions that are more effective and impactful,” he said.

Terrence opines that hackathons, design competitions, and mentorship programs can provide a platform for innovators to come together and share ideas.

These events can help identify and nurture talent, providing opportunities for individuals to develop their skills and showcase their work.

“Hackathons and design competitions are great ways to unite people and foster innovation. They provide a conducive environment for people to share ideas, learn from each other, and create something truly innovative,” Okafor  said.

Okafor is an experienced product designer and innovation expert with a proven track record of driving innovation in the tech industry.

With his expertise and passion for collaboration, he has helped numerous companies develop innovative solutions that have transformed the industry.

Highlighting some of his key achievements as a design expert, he said “I was the lead product designer for Waza, a B2B platform specializing in providing businesses with access to liquidity for cross-border payments. My expertise was instrumental in shaping the company’s brand identity and creating digital products and features. The company has raised $8M in funding.

On how he has been impacting knowledge to others, he explained that he offers mentorships for entry-level designers and other design enthusiasts.

“I volunteer on ADPList, mentoring entry-level designers globally. It helps me give back to the industry by sharing my experience and insights with my mentees, and creating a healthy environment to contribute to their journey in tech,” he said.
