Biafra group, IBN commends support for state creation

By Chinonso Alozie

Owerri – The Igbo-Biafra Nationalists, IBN, on Tuesday commended the groups and individuals who supported the IBN, proposal for the creation of an additional state for the South East region.

The convener of the group, Mazi Uche Mefor, stated this in a statement to newsmen in Owerri, about the struggle for the state creation.

He said among other things that; “The Igbo-Biafra Nationalists and the Indigenous People of Igbo Nation for Self-Determination commend all efforts by individuals and groups, both overt and covert, to adopt our campaign and proposal for the creation of additional states in the South-East region. This initiative aims to bring the region to par with others that have six or seven states. Notable figures at the forefront of this endeavour include Honourable Ugochinyere and Senator Ned Nwoko, advocating for Orlu and Anioma states respectively.

“Our ultimate goal is to see an autonomous, mono-linguistic, and mono-ethnic Igbo nation that can compete favourably with other regions in Nigeria. This remains true whether they are in a regional, federal, or confederal arrangement, or as autonomous and independent entities, which we consider as a last resort. Additionally, we advocate for the reinstatement and reintegration of all uprooted and transferred Igbo communities, currently gerrymandered into the South-South and North Central regions, back to Igboland, their ancestral homeland.”

“In this regard, we express our support for the creation of Anioma state, as Anioma is an Igbo-speaking area. The Igbo-Biafra Nationalists and the Indigenous People of Igbo Nation for Self-Determination prefer that the uprooted Igbo communities currently gerrymandered into the South-South be included in Anioma state or, ideally, be reintegrated into the states within the South-East region from which they were originally transferred.

“Conversely, the creation of Orlu State would lead to further balkanization of the South-East, which is why we favour Anioma due to its inherent Igbo identity. We urge the proponents of both Orlu and Anioma states to strategically collaborate and work together to ensure a robust political bargain for the Igbo people in particular and the South-East region in general,” he said.
