Health experts call for centralization of complex surgeries

A team of healthcare professionals, comprising Dr. Femi Giwa, Dr. Aitua Salami, and Dr. Ajibola Abioye, has advocated  the centralization of complex surgical procedures to enhance patient outcomes and alleviate healthcare costs.

They made this known in a medical report, titled “Hospital Esophagectomy Volume and Postoperative Length of Stay: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis,” which sought to examine the relationship between hospital esophagectomy volume and postoperative length of stay.

The medical experts stated that Esophageal cancer remains a significant public health challenge globally, ranking as the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The implementation of centralization helps to streamline care delivery and enhance surgical quality.

Giwa firmly asserts that ” By centralizing complex surgeries to specialized centres, surgeons benefit from the experience curve, processes become standardized and it significantly enhances patient care while simultaneously alleviating the economic burden on both individuals and healthcare systems.”

The experts revealed that many hospitals, lacking the requisite capacity in terms of equipment and manpower, often undertake complex procedures, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased financial strain on patients.

Salami emphasized the need for a strategic approach, noting: “Centralization allows for the consolidation of resources and expertise, resulting in improved surgical outcomes and reduced healthcare costs. Patients deserve access to high-quality care without enduring unnecessary delays and financial hardships.”

They opined that reduced postoperative hospital stays translate to decreased work absenteeism, heightened productivity, and overall economic gains for society at large.

Abioye stressed the holistic benefits of centralizing complex surgeries, saying: “By streamlining the delivery of complex surgeries, we not only enhance patient recovery but also empower individuals to resume their normal lives with greater ease and confidence.”

In response to these compelling findings, calls for action are gaining momentum within the medical community. The medical experts continue to urge policy makers to enact measures that prioritize the centralization of complex surgeries to specialized centres, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and sustainable healthcare practices.

Giwa and his colleagues earnestly extend this call to governmental bodies and all stakeholders within the healthcare sphere. They urge policy makers to heed the findings of their innovative report and spearhead the formulation of policies conducive to its success. With the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery and alleviate financial burdens on patients, the trio implores concerted action to amplify the impact of their research for the betterment of society.
