International Women’s Day, or Women’s History Month, is celebrated in March to draw attention to and enhance the focus on women in historical studies. It is a day when women are celebrated for their achievements, irrespective of national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political differences.
March 8 is officially recognised by the United Nations as a day to pay tribute to women from past, present, and future generations who have advocated for gender equality and supported charities that focus on women’s issues. It is a day of united global activism and celebration that is inclusive of everyone committed to advancing women’s equality.
History
The first official International Women’s Day was in 1975, when it was recognised by the United Nations (UN).
Its origins actually date back even earlier, to 1908, when a women’s rights march in New York City drew 15,000 people advocating for improved pay and voting rights.
International Women’s Month, according to some reports, also dates back to New York City on March 8, 1857, when female textile workers marched to protest against unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women.
This event marked one of the earliest organised strikes by working women, during which they demanded a shorter workday and fair wages.
International Women’s Day is celebrated in 100 of the 195 countries in the world. Countries like Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia recognise it as an official holiday.
2024 Theme
The theme for International Women’s Day in 2024 is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’.
The theme acknowledges that, despite advancements, women encounter substantial barriers to attaining equal participation in the economy. It calls for ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls to enhance their skills and abilities, enabling them to learn, earn, and lead effectively.
According to the official IWD website: “When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.”
