Human rights activist, Femi Falana has called on the Inspector General of Police to provide adequate security to protesters during the planned protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the hardship faced by Nigerians.
Recall that he NLC will on Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28 protest following the spike in the prices of goods and services due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the free fall of the naira.
In a statement, Falana said, “In view of the threat of some police officers to clamp down on members of the Nigeria Labour Congress who have resolved to protest against hardship in the country from February 27-28, 2024, it is pertinent to point out that protesters are entitled to police protection. Specifically, section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act 2020 provides as follows: ‘Where a person or organization notifies the police of his or its intention to hold a public meeting, rally or procession on a public highway or such meetings in a place where the public has access to , the police officer responsible for the area where the meeting rally or procession will take place shall mobilize personnel to provide security to provide security cover for the meeting, rally or the procession.’
“We are compelled to call on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the protesters are given adequate security by the various police commands in the country. “
Falana had earlier asked the Attorney General Of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to provide security for demonstrators.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in a letter dated February 24 and addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation, said Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act empowers the Minister of Justice to provide security cover for the protesters.
Falana also called on the organised labour to conduct their scheduled rallies peacefully void of violence.
The letter partly reads, “While we have advised the members of the NLC to conduct the rallies scheduled for February 27-28, 2024 in a peaceful manner, we urge you to use your good offices to direct the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security to the conveners and participants in the protest in line with the provisions of Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act.
“Finally, while awaiting your favourable reply to this letter, please accept, as usual, the assurance of our highest esteem.”
