Edo 2024: Obaseki cannot Produce Governor, Deputy, says group

As delegates converge on the Samuel Ogebmudia Stadium in the ancient city of Benin today  to elect the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the September 2024 governorship election, the Edo State Justice and Peace Forum (EJPF) has thrown its weight behind the aspiration of the Party’s frontline candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo whom they described as the most experienced  and most prepared for the coveted office.

In endorsing the aspiration of Ighodalo who currently serves as Chairman of the Edo State Alaghodaro Summit and is believed to be the preferred candidate of Governor Godwin Obaseki, the EJPF stated that in order to promote equity, peaceful coexistence and unity within the PDP family, the Governor must concede the Deputy Governorship slot to other tendencies within the PDP, especially the so called “Old PDP”.

Speaking with newsmen in Benin City on Wednesday the secretary of the EJPF, Honourable Edgar Atohengbe stated that “the EJPG congratulates the PDP Leaders in Edo State for their bold and fair judgement in unanimously endorsing  Dr. Asue Ighodalo as their choice for the governship slot of PDP 2024. Dr. Ighodalo who hails from Ewohinmi in the old Agbazilo Division of Esan Land is not only the most competent of all the aspirants in the race, but is also the most suitable from the perspective of equity, as the Okpebho zone of esan land had preveiously produced Prof Ambrose Alli and Prof Osareimen Osunbor. His emergence would, consequently, be in line with justice and fairness.”

“However, given the current fragmentation within the PDP, the imperative of uniting the party ahead of the general election, and most importantly, the fact that Dr. Ighodalo is from the Governor’s bloc of the PDP/New PDP, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the party must, as a matter of common sense, equity and good conscience, should be selected from the old PDP bloc in Edo South.  This delicate balancing act is necessary if the PDP is intent on getting to the promised land in September.”

“Surreptitious attempts by senior officials of the Obaseki Administration to foist a high ranking member of the Governor’s cabinet from Edo South on Dr Ighodalo to serve as his running mate is simultaneously divisive and insensitive. Beyond making the ticket lopsided in favour of the New PDP, it will further polarize the party and may cost the party victory.”

“Consequently, we call on leaders of the PDP to tow the line of justice and equity by selecting a Deputy Governor from the Old PDP bloc that compliments Dr. Ighodalo’s pedigree, would appeal to all tendencies within the party and most importantly, have the charisma to attract popular votes for the ticket in the general elections” Atohengbe concluded.
