Supreme Court judgment: Kano residents stay indoor

Kano

By Bashir Bello, Kano

As the Supreme Court is set to deliver its judgement in the highly contentious governorship election in Kano State, residents of the ancient city of Kano have resorted to staying indoors or within the confines of their homes until the outcome of the legal battle is announced.

This was coming as most schools, shops, and banks, among others, were under lock.

Major roads in the state capital were also deserted, as only a few vehicles could be seen plying the roads.

This could not be unconnected with the fear of any form of eventuality from the outcome of the judgement.

Our correspondent observed that most parents prevented their children from going to school, while some school owners asked the schoolchildren to stay back at home.

A parent, Ramatu Aminu, said, “I don’t want to take any chances, and so I didn’t allow my children to go to school because of the judgement.

“I cannot run with two children and a baby in my back. So let them just stay at home for today.”

A proprietor, whose name is withheld, asks their students to stay back at home.

A text from the school proprietor to parents reads, “Good evening, everyone.

Considering the governorship verdict in Kano tomorrow, we advise that the pupils be kept home. We are sorry for saying this so late. Please help us circulate this information to all concerned who are not on this platform. May God keep us in peace,” the text reads.

Shop owners at the popular GSM market in the farm centre and Sabon Gari had their shops locked.

A resident of Sabon Gari, Mr Paul, said shop owners in the area were sceptical about opening their shops due to the court outcome.

“Residents are indoors. The road is empty, as if it were a day of sanitation. Shop owners were sceptical about opening their shops as they were seen standing in front of them. It is the nature of Kano,” he said.

Recall that the police command, under the leadership of CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, on Thursday told residents of the state to go about their legitimate businesses without fear of any threat, noting that it has put in place adequate security measures in the state.
