Bwala
The shocking defection of one of Atiku Abubakar’s spokesmen, Daniel Bwala to President Bola Tinubu, and as such to the All Progressives Congress, APC has bewildered the nation.
Though some political actors claim not to be totally shocked given their knowledge of Bwala, the greater proportion of Nigerians have been astounded by the movement of Bwala to a party he not too long ago claimed was suffused with brainless individuals.
In a tweet he made in November 2022, he said: “The human brain is unique and miraculous. It works and functions optically 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year, UNTIL YOU JOIN APC, THEN IT STOPS WORKING.”
Bwala was indeed originally inclined to the APC, but found out the vacuity of the APC brain supposedly when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu decided to run on the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
At that time, he expressed concern that the APC had opted for “politics over unity.”
He was at that time a senior aide of the then Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege but promptly left the job and the APC.
He was cheerfully welcomed by Atiku Abubakar who made him his spokesman.
Before him as ‘spokesman’ was another macabre political actor and former aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri.
Following his stewardship in the Jonathan government, Omokri wore several labels including pastor, human rights activist, Peter Obi for president canvasser and APC basher.
However, ahead of the 2023 General Election he is most remembered as about the most fervent critic of Peter Obi. His criticisms of Obi were despite the old videos of him posing with Obi and describing him as about the best presidential material to have come out of Nigeria.
Remarkably, despite his strident criticisms of Muhammadu Buhari and the APC, Omokri was surprisingly very lame in squaring up to Tinubu. Some explained it away on his supposed Itsekiri links with Senator Remi Tinubu.
Whatever, once the baton of power changed, Omokri to the surprise of many continued digging into Peter Obi and at the same time began to explain away the certificate problems of President Tinubu.
He is now no longer accorded the toga of an Atiku representative being rather seen more as a lone ranger.
Indeed, there is now an increasing debate among some in Atiku’s camp that the duo of Bwala and Omokri may have been moles from Tinubu. Omokri especially served Tinubu’s interest in not just acquitting him of certificate forgery, but even more, of acting as an acerbic tormentor of Peter Obi.
It is no secret that at the peak of the campaign and even during the election petition proceedings that the Obi and the Atiku camps regularly exchanged notes and used back door channels to form common attacks on the APC and Tinubu. However, Omokri appeared to have been a particular exception to this cordiality as he was unrelenting on his attacks on Obi.
Some at that time thought that he was serving Atiku’s desire but many are npw beginning to think otherwise. The thought is either he was serving to crumble the Atiku-Obi détente to Tinubu’s favour, or acting to destroy Obi directly.
Whatever, the volte-face by Bwala and Omokri appear to expose something that many Atiku lovers fear, the instability of his recent day choices of media men.
It is remarkable that Phrank Shaibu has remained with him despite what some may consider as the vicious attacks coming his way from Kogi and elsewhere.
Whatever, the indiscretion appears not to be limited to Atiku.
President Bola Tinubu shocked many with the constitution of his own media team. Despite having about the most elaborate media team of any president in the Fourth Republic, the efficacy of the team has been relatively doubtful. His decision to relegate his long standing spokesman, Tunde Rahman in favour of a rather more junior colleague was met with askance.
Whereas Rahman can plead with some of his former subordinates or even ‘order’ them on issues, the capacity of the presidential spokesman to reach out is yet to manifest.
Meanwhile, Labour Party also experienced its own dose of defection with the decision of Doyin Okupe, the erstwhile director-general of the Obi Campaign to resign from the party. Labour Party described his exit in not too decorous language asserting that the baggage Okupe brought from the PDP could not find accommodation in Labour Party.
Whatever, the shocking decision by Bwala to return to the APC may have now prompted the question of whether he returned to the APC with or without his brain.
