In the vibrant Nigerian art community where brushstrokes tell tales and canvases narrate stories, talented artists are making waves on the global stage.
However, many of these individuals face challenges when it comes to funding and support to actualize their dreams.
Many are at various crossroads in life and even contemplating closing shops due to the lack of support system or access to funds.
Ask any contemporary or emerging artist what his/her major challenges are, funding and access to the international market would make the first list. Of course, every artist’s dream is to be known, but the primary aim of creating those art pieces is to make money, put Nigeria on the world map and for sustainability.
It’s fascinating to know that Access Holdings, through its collaborative effort with ART X Lagos, founded by Tokini Peterside-Schwebig has brought relief and opportunities for artists through various empowerment programs. One of the highlights is the Access ART X Prize, which recognizes and rewards exceptional talents. The ART X Fair, an annual event, has grown to host galleries and artists from over 40 countries, putting Nigerian art on the world map. Engaging discussions and panels take center stage at ART X Talks, where artists, curators, and art enthusiasts come together to share insights, ideas, and experiences. These thought-provoking conversations provide a deeper understanding of the art industry and its impact on society.
ART X Live brings the art world to life through captivating performances that fuse various art forms. From live music to dance and spoken word, this dynamic showcase celebrates the intersection of different artistic expressions, creating a truly immersive experience for attendees.
ART X Lagos has become renowned for its specially curated projects that feature both emerging and established artists in Nigeria and diaspora. This inclusive approach not only fosters collaboration but also highlights the diverse narratives and perspectives within the African art scene.
In the past eight editions, many artists have won the Access ART X Prize, and have enjoyed the international exposure, grants, and mentorships received by each winner. Some of the past winners of this prestigious prize include Julius Agbaje (2023 Nigerian winner) and Asmaa Jama (2023 African/Diasporan winner), Dafe Oboro (2022 Nigerian Winner), Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński (2022 African/Diasporan Winner), Chigozie Obi (2021), Etinosa Yvonne (2019), Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola (2018), Habeeb Andu (2017), and Patrick Akpojotor (2016). And warming up for the 2024 edition.
Considering how bigger and better the prize has become, it’s expected that this year’s edition will become even bolder and more impactful. As one of Africa’s financial powerhouse, Access Holdings is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that, as well as advancing the course of a prosperous Africa. This long-standing commitment is underscored by its mission to empower the next generation of African creatives through the transformative power of art.
At the eighth edition of West Africa’s leading international art fair, ART X Lagos, Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings PLC, summed up the intentions of the company towards the art sector and, one of the core focuses he mentioned was the company’s commitment to supporting and promoting African art through it’s continued sponsorship of the Access ART X Prize.
“Through our support of ART X Lagos, we aim to highlight the multifaceted brilliance of our people and the richness of our culture. In doing so, we will unabashedly celebrate the diversity and strength of the African continent, nurture relationships that transcend borders, build bridges, invest in talent, and foster collaboration on a global scale. This belief is the driving force behind the company’s continued sponsorship of the Access ART X Prize, an award in partnership with ART X Lagos, which provides early-career artists from Africa and its diaspora with opportunities to develop their craft,” Wigwe stated.
With this unwavering support from Access Holdings, more talents will be discovered and allowed to make their mark on the international stage in anticipation of its 9th edition this year. Just as Julius Agbaje (Nigeria 2023 winner) shared about his struggles before the Access ART X experience. That night when he was announced winner he could not hold back his tears of joy, he dedicated his victory to his parents, he said his parents supported his vision even when he was ‘falling and rising’.
He noted that winning the Access ART X Prize was a huge breakthrough for him. ‘I am overwhelmed, thank you for the platform and the opportunity given to artists,” he added.
