Expert advocate ways to tackle diversity challenges at workplace

A diversity and inclusion expert, Modupe Saliu, has called on management of organisations across sectors to embrace diversity, by giving equal opportunities to those seeking employment in their firm, irrespective of cultural or religious background. 

Speaking recently at a media briefing, Saliu said organisations must continually evolve in other to foster an inclusive environment for their employees.

She explained that recruitment and hiring of staff pose common early hurdles, even as job positions increasingly target under represented groups. 

She said: “Workforce diversity involves creating cultures where people feel empowered to bring their authentic selves to work, have equal opportunities to grow and have their voices heard,” adding that organisations need to analyze whether job descriptions use biased language or requirements not directly related to role success.

Saliu with extensive experience advising Nigerian companies, she provides guidance for organizations aiming to move beyond token representation. 

The expert continually stresses diversity’s hard benefits to include,  innovation, productivity, and revenue increases, adding that most successful companies have come to recognize that diversity drives better decision making at every level. 

“Equally important is an inclusive culture allowing employees to thrive once hired,” she said.

Saliu disclosed that she has spearheaded interactive training programmes focused on mitigating unconscious bias and structural barriers that hinder retention and mobility of minorities. 

“I have been involved in sponsorship initiatives, belongingness surveys and emphasizing that leadership accountability also propel progress,” she noted..   

While the workplace diversity expert remains dedicated to progress through a lens focused on human experiences over numbers, she emphasizes that beyond checks and quotas, true inclusion starts with fostering environments where equal access and belonging empower everyone to reach their full potential.
