HOUSE of Representatives has adopted the recommendations of the Ad-hoc Committee on international boundary dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon.

The House announced the adoption of the Ad-hoc Committee report presented by Hon. Awaji-Inobek D. Abiante which addresses critical concerns surrounding the demarcation and ceding of communities in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State and Sina-Kamale Area of Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Adhoc Committee was set up following a Motion by Hon Victor Abang, the member representing Ikom/Boki federal constituency of Cross River State on the floor of the House. The House, in its resolution, urged officials of the Nigerian government entrusted with the task of boundary protection and demarcation to exhibit patriotism and professionalism in executing their duties.

The recommendations emphasise adherence to the International Court of Justice, ICJ, judgment of 2002.and urged the National Boundary Commission and the Surveyor-General’s Offices to meticulously follow specified coordinates in tracing and delineating the Nigeria-Cameroon border. The report underscores the importance of upholding the historical and natural border points recognized by the ICJ.

The House asserted the need for the federal government to suspend ongoing demarcation exercise by the United Nations Joint Task Team and the National Boundary Commission. and calls for a reinterpretation of the ICJ ruling, giving due respect to traditional boundaries and ensuring the rights and interests of local populations are paramount.

The House also raised concerns regarding the French company responsible for demarcating the boundaries, urging a change due to perceived bias against Nigerian interests.

The Defense Headquartres is also urged to establish a Permanent Forward Operating Base at Danare in Boki Local Government Area, to meet the community’s emergency needs in the area. Hon. Victor Abang and the House of Representatives are steadfast in their pursuit of a just and equitable resolution to the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary dispute, emphasizing adherence to international legal judgments, respect for traditional boundaries, and the protection of local communities.
