Technological breakthroughs and advent of the internet are proof that technology is the future of any society.
The rewards content creators receive daily have, in no small measure, portrayed the internet as a fertile ground if its potentials are well harnessed.
It is therefore amazing how a social media platform known as Diary of a Naija Girl (the DANG Community), an online community inspiring women across the world through creative storytelling has transformed into a community of over a million women.
It has also birthed Dang! Lifestyle, a pioneering beauty and lifestyle brand dedicated to empowering women of colour by offering a comprehensive range of innovative, clean, and premium beauty, skincare, fragrance, and personal care products.
Founded in 2019 and launched in Nigeria in November 2020, the company is built on the principles of inclusivity, diversity, and empowerment, with a mission to celebrate and enhance the natural beauty of women with deeper skin tones.
So far, DANG! Lifestyle as a community is growing in leaps and bounds, having its presence in UK, USA, Canada, Ghana and Kenya. The women there talk about how the business has grown and how they’ve benefited from the brand’s range of products.
Dang! boasts a robust distribution network, with a strong presence in both online and offline markets across Africa, Europe, and North America. It has established a significant retail footprint in Nigeria, with seven flagship stores strategically located to provide an immersive brand experience for their customers.
In addition to their standalone stores, Dang! products are also available in many stores across the country, further expanding their reach and accessibility to a wider audience. The multi-channel approach enables it to cater to diverse customer preferences and shopping habits, reinforcing its commitment to making the brand and products accessible to all.
Interestingly, Dang! has sold over 450,000 units of products across their market reach and according to the CEO of Dang! Lifestyle and founder of Diary of a Naija Girl (the DANG Community), Ifedayo Agoro, “The need to address the harmful effects of skin bleaching in Nigeria, inspired the launch of “Honour Your Skin” campaign in June-July 2023, which garnered over 1 million views across social media platforms. This campaign promotes inclusivity, self-love, and healthy skin habits, resonating with customers and resulting in a significant surge in our customer base.”
Agoro, an entrepreneur, creative writer, content creator, content marketer, and media strategist, further noted that “At Dang!, we are committed to developing sophisticated, premium skincare products that not only create a warm and inviting atmosphere but also enhance the overall well-being of the skin and mind.
“We strive to ensure that our customers receive the highest quality products by continuously improving our methods, utilizing advanced technology, and streamlining our processes.
“Our products are formulated by board-certified experts who specialize in melanin skin and are made with sustainably sourced, non-toxic ingredients. We prioritize product transparency, providing clear and accurate information about ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing.
“Dang! Lifestyle is a destination for women of colour seeking beauty products that truly understand and celebrate their unique needs. Through our innovative e-commerce platform, commitment to quality and sustainability, and strong sense of community, we aim to empower and inspire our customers to embrace their natural beauty.”
On what inspired her interest in women-focused community building, Ifedayo, fondly known as Ife, said “What influenced me to start the Diary of a Naija Girl, DANG, is the need for the voice of women to be heard. I wanted to be able to speak to women who think like me or who want to think like me and let them know that every woman can be anything and say anything she wants. You have every right that a man has.
So, I started the page by just writing about myself, sharing my story without shame. You know people like to shame others. When you have an experience especially as a woman, if you bare it, society likes to make you feel ashamed, meanwhile, you are the victim you did nothing wrong. So, I started speaking my mind and gradually it became what it is today where we are a people who are now unashamed to tell our story.”
At present, the brand boasts of over a million followers. The transformation, according to her, took place because “I put more of my truth, integrity, and stories I put out there. Because there’s nothing you can do to hide your intentions, people will still see you no matter what. I wanted to tell my truth; I wanted people to share it and I wanted women to speak their own truth as well. When we started, it was just me and gradually we started sharing and then that’s it.”
As one of the earliest social media communities that have stood the test of time, Ife revealed that the brand has been sustained because people like to share. “They like to be in a community. They like to show that they care. I’m very passionate about women, so I realised that it’s because of consistency. Sometimes when things are not going well, people give up. I did not give up when people were not liking and sharing stories. Consistency paid, true stories, real stories, helping the women on the platform, making them feel that they are part of something, that’s very important,” she said.
Ife who encourages women to believe in themselves and go ahead and excel in their different ventures, disclosed that the impact of the brand has been amazing. “Not only has the Diary of a Naija Girl community impacted me first as a person because even from that platform, I’ve been able to set up a business that is very successful- DANG Lifestyle. Not only has it impacted me as a person, it impacted many women.
“Dang! Lifestyle is shaping a generation of seasoned individuals who prioritise wellness, and self-care and are inspired to be the best versions of themselves, through engaging community events and innovative products.
“This brand through edutainment content, podcasts, and conferences has shaped lives positively, proving that Dang! Lifestyle is not just a brand but a movement.
Dang! has also hosted conferences and several online workshops, allowing community members to learn new things and improve their lives.”
She further hinted about the Dang! Lifestyle Experience Center which is a luxury experience space that “Will prioritize our customers’ wellness through interactive experiences that will bring our brand’s promise to life. Our in-house aestheticians will provide cutting-edge facial treatments as well as skin assessments so that our customers can learn more quickly about their skin types and solutions for their skin concerns.
Looking ahead, Dang! Lifestyle has ambitious plans to further expand its reach and product lines based on customer feedback and industry trends.”
