The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest (NANS Zone D) has condemned the increment in tuition fees at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, it lamented how Nigerian students, with some of them on self-sponsorhip, are paying for what they don’t get.

It tasked the school management to detail how the school finances are being expended while describing the latest increment as wicked.

The body threatened to relocate its headquarters to FUTA if the increment is not reversed.

The statement reads,”In a chat with one of the Student Union Representatives, it was gathered that the University management held a meeting with the Student Union body, to Lias a preposition on increment. The proposed plan; Returning students (100level to 500level) of Futa whose current fees is about #14,000 to #16,000 will now have to pay #60,000, while new intake students who are suppose to pay #50,000 in total will now have to pay about #100,000.

“It’s pitiful and sardonic to say that Nigerian students are paying for what they don’t get. The University should make a detailed explanation on the finances of the University and how it’s been spent / utilized. It’s not apologetic to say the University management under the leadership of Prof. Adenike Oladiji is been wicked to Nigerian Students especially indigent students who are striving hard to attain a first degree through self sponsorship.

“As the body that governs all students organization in Nigeria. The zonal leadership of NANS (Southwest) will not hesitate to relocate her secretariat to FUTA if the proposed hardship on Nigerian Students through tuition fees increment is not reversed.

“It is important to call the attention of the federal government to the implementation of 2009 FG/ASUU agreement on tertiary institution, especially the funding aspect of the agreement which is one of the reasons for hardship in the public University sector. We plead with the President of the Country, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to please look into funding system, subventions for our public universities.”
