In the dynamic landscape of healthcare in Nigeria, Dr. Olugbenga Olayide Oyewole stands out as a medical professional per excellence. His remarkable journey in medicine began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Ilorin in 1997. Since then, he has devoted his career to advancing healthcare, particularly in Lagos State, where he has made a lasting impact as a respected medical professional and leader.

Dr. Oyewole commenced his medical career in February 2000 at Shigun Hospital and Maternity, stepping into the role of Medical Officer. His early years were marked by a commitment to patient care and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. In June 2015, he further solidified his expertise by obtaining a fellowship in Pathology (Morbid Anatomy) from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

His ascent through the ranks has been impressive. After serving as a Medical Officer, Dr. Oyewole advanced to the position of senior morbid histopathologist and ultimately became the senior medical director at the Lagos State General Hospital. His leadership in this capacity has been pivotal in enhancing the quality of medical services offered at the institution.

In October 2015, Dr. Oyewole was appointed as a Consultant Pathologist with the state government, and he was posted to the Lagos State General Hospital, Marina, a role that allowed him to significantly influence pathology practices across Lagos. He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Anatomic Pathology and a Senior Pathology Consultant. His expertise in morbid histopathology has positioned him as one of the leading figures in this specialized field.

He later became Chief Consultant Anatomic Pathologist and an authority in histopathology. He served as expert witness at some of the most controversial wrongful death litigation cases in Lagos State including the Coroner investigating the cause of death of Lagos-based baker, Peju Ugboma in April 2021; the corona inquest into the death of Ifedolapo Atansuyi before the Lagos State magistrate in 2017; and the Expert witness and autopsy reviewer of the Popular Witney Adeniran, the deceased 12-year old Chrisland schoolgirl in Lagos, Nigeria. In addition to this, Dr. Oyewole has been consulted by foreign countries including Germany.

Dr. Oyewole’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice. He has played an instrumental role in training the next generation of healthcare professionals, mentoring about 40 junior and senior resident doctors, particularly in Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. His commitment to education has established him as a prominent authority within the medical community, earning him respect among peers and students alike. His mentorship goes beyond academic instruction; he instills values of compassion, integrity, and dedication in those he trains, shaping the future of Nigerian healthcare.

In February 2016, Dr. Oyewole was appointed the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee, the team of 11 represented by various departments of the Lagos State General Hospital. Dr. Oyewole is deeply engaged in public health initiatives, recognizing that healthcare is not just about treatment but also prevention and education. His holistic approach to medicine aligns with global best practices and resonates with the communities he serves.

Dr. Oyewole’s influence also extends to the academic sphere, where he shares his knowledge and insights at various medical conferences and through published works. He has published many peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals which have been cited almost 100 times. His contributions to medical literature have provided invaluable resources for practitioners and students alike, further solidifying his role as a thought leader in pathology.
