Nigeria’s first Specialised Medical and Health Sciences Tertiary institution, the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State, has received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to graduate professional medical doctors.

A press statement, signed by the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Temitope Oluwatayo, said that the approval of the Council follows the accreditation visit to UNIMED, Ondo, between Wednesday, November 30, 2022 and Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Oluwatayo said that the visit of the council was to ascertain the available resources for the training of MBBS students in the university.

According to him the provisional approval of the Council was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, UNIMED, Ondo, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi.

He noted that the document was signed by the Registrar, MDCN, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi.

Oluwatayo said that the accreditation, as approved by the Council, ‘is renewable every five (5) years, subject to continued satisfactory evidence of the progressive development of the MBBS programme.

’With this development, final-year students of the MBBS programme at the university can now write their final professional examination and be inducted into the medical council.

The institutions spokesperson said that “The focus of the management of UNIMED, Ondo, under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, is not simply to succeed in accreditation processes but to be an institution grounded in international best practices, and a hub of excellence in medical education and research that contribute to improved health and well-being nationally and globally.
