Sustainable supply chains are not just a necessity for the environment but also a key to operational efficiency, according to Victory Ikpe, a supply chain data analyst with extensive expertise in supply chain management.
Ikpe emphasizes that governments and industries must play pivotal roles in fostering sustainable practices, highlighting how collective action can lead to significant advancements in supply chain sustainability.
Ikpe, a research associate at Western Illinois University’s School of Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Decision Sciences, integrates data-driven methodologies to enhance sustainability in supply chain operations. She focuses on minimizing environmental impact while ensuring efficiency and profitability. Ikpe believes that governments can accelerate sustainability by enacting supportive policies, offering tax incentives for green initiatives, and funding research into sustainable technologies. “Governments have the tools to create a framework that incentivizes companies to adopt sustainable practices,” she says.
Industries, on the other hand, must integrate sustainability into their corporate strategies. “Companies need to invest in research and development for sustainable practices and lead by example in corporate social responsibility,” Ikpe explains. She also underscores the importance of collaboration between sectors, suggesting that partnerships on international sustainability standards, educational programs to raise awareness, and platforms for sharing best practices can accelerate progress.
Ikpe’s journey into supply chain sustainability began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that presented unprecedented challenges for logistics and supply chains worldwide. Shortly after graduating from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ikpe co-managed ONWUMAH Logistics, a last-mile delivery service that faced a surge in orders during the pandemic. “The intense demand during this period led me to develop a data-driven optimization strategy I called ‘Fit for Purpose,’” Ikpe recalls. The strategy introduced targeted delivery windows based on consumer availability, which significantly reduced the company’s environmental impact. By optimizing routes and minimizing fuel consumption, the approach also improved operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
“These initial successes in streamlining logistics operations sparked my broader interest in sustainable supply chains,” she says, adding that the experience laid the foundation for her commitment to enhancing sustainability in supply chain management. Building on her experiences, Ikpe developed a Sustainable Supply Chain Model aimed at addressing key challenges in retail. This model incorporates lean supply chain principles to eliminate inefficiencies such as overstocking and unnecessary processes. Advanced technologies, including real-time data analytics, play a central role in the model by providing actionable insights for improved decision-making.
Another critical aspect of the model is its focus on sustainable practices, such as eco-friendly packaging and the integration of renewable energy. “This practical approach helps retailers reduce costs, meet consumer demands for sustainability, and improve overall operational effectiveness,” Ikpe explains. Ikpe’s work is an example of how innovative strategies can address the environmental and operational challenges facing supply chains. Her efforts demonstrate that sustainability is not just a moral imperative but also a practical approach to improving business performance.
As global and local industries grapple with the challenges of climate change, economic uncertainties, and evolving consumer expectations, Ikpe’s vision for sustainable supply chains offers a roadmap for success. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to data-driven strategies, governments and industries in Nigeria and beyond can unlock the full potential of sustainable supply chains. By combining environmental responsibility with efficiency, Ikpe’s work underscores that the future of supply chain management lies in sustainable practices that benefit both businesses and the planet.
