The Igbo Community Swansea, is not just a gathering of people with like minds but of Igbo ladies and gentlemen who have the zeal to propagate Igbo culture, and to make sure the Igbo language doesn’t go extinguished in the tongues of Igbo kids who live abroad. 

According to the convener of the group, Otuu Obinna Ogbonnia (KSM), who organised all Igbos in Swansea, Wales with fellow like minds to form the group, “Our first outing was a beach party, which took place on 16th of July. 

“It wasn’t easy to achieve this though, but God made it possible. Now, we have a family away from our various homes, and by God’s grace, our first ofala will be coming up by December 2023”. 

He went ahead to enumerate some programmes which the group plans to roll out as to easily achieve their goals.  

The most applauded among the programmes he listed was a free Sunday evening base Igbo language tutorials, which will be handled by qualified Igbo teachers via Zoom platform. 

According to him “Any child who wishes to join can join from any part of the world(USA, Canada etc). It is free as the Zoom link(unlimited) has been paid for. So, just buy your child a smart device(phone, tablet, laptop etc) to join the class. All we need now are more Igbo teaching volunteers as to alternate them weekly, since we don’t have plans yet to pay anyone”. 

He also mentioned their plan to procure an intermittent apartment(hall) to accommodate some Igbos who arrive Swansea stranded, until they find a place to stay. 

Otuu Obinna Ogbonnia, a Knight of the Catholic church, an erstwhile Student Union Government(SUG) president who won best serving corps member (NYSC) award from the Labor Party presidential candidate HE Mr Peter Obi, while he was a Governor, was recently on the news for sharing #10,000 each to all his project students in Federal Polytechnic Oko Anambra State, where he is a lecturer till date.  

The verified Facebook user has been a philantropist and astute researcher with many published papers to his credit. Kudos to him as we call Igbos in diaspora to join or emulate this move as to propagate the Igbo language.
