Fine art photographer Okeugo concludes solo exhibition ‘Ųmų Anya’ at Rele Gallery

Rele Gallery, Lagos successfully hosted Ųmų Anya (Children of the Eye), a compelling solo exhibition by fine art photographer Mavic Chijioke Okeugo, held from April 6–12, 2021. The exhibition drew collectors, curators, artists, and members of the public into an intimate visual dialogue centered on childhood, perception, memory, and imagination.

Ųmų Anya translated as Children of the Eye presented a series of richly detailed photographic works that blur the boundaries between realism and expression. Through meticulously composed images, Okeugo explored the inner worlds of children, positioning them not merely as subjects but as active seers bearers of curiosity, resilience, and emotional depth. Each image invited viewers to slow down and look more closely, engaging the “eye” as both a physical and spiritual instrument of understanding.

Displayed within the clean, minimalist space of Rele Gallery, the works created a striking contrast between vivid color, narrative texture, and the quiet authority of the white walls. Scenes of children riding bicycles, playing, or confronting the viewer in stillness unfolded across the gallery, evoking nostalgia while resisting sentimentality. The exhibition’s visual language drew from personal memory and broader cultural experience, offering a nuanced reflection on innocence, agency, and the ways children navigate and interpret their environments.

Throughout the exhibition week, visitors engaged directly with the artist during walkthroughs and informal conversations. Okeugo’s presence in the gallery standing with his works, explaining details, and interacting with guests reinforced the personal nature of the project and deepened audience connection to the images. The exhibition resonated strongly with viewers, many of whom praised its emotional clarity, technical mastery, and conceptual coherence.

Speaking on the body of work, Mavic Chijioke Okeugo described Ųmų Anya as an exploration of “how children see and how we, as adults, remember seeing.” The exhibition marked an important moment in his practice, affirming his position within the contemporary fine art photography landscape in Nigeria and beyond.

Rele Gallery’s presentation of Ųmų Anya (Children of the Eye) further underscored its ongoing commitment to showcasing thoughtful, boundary-pushing African artists whose works engage both local and global conversations.

The exhibition closed on April 12, 2021, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and contributing meaningfully to contemporary discourse around childhood, vision, and representation in fine art photography.
