When Dear Affy premiered in Nigerian cinemas on February 14, 2020, it arrived with the kind of energy that signalled something special. Directed by Samuel Olatunji and produced by Wale Muraina, the romantic comedy immediately connected with audiences, drawing excitement for its relatable story, rich humour, and a cast that reflected the depth of modern Nollywood.
Starring a star-studded cast led by Kehinde Bankole, alongside Enyinna Nwigwe, Toyin Abraham, Odunlade Adekola, Bimbo Ademoye, Bimbo Akintola, and other leading Nollywood talents, Dear Affy resonated with audiences for its humour, relatability, and emotional depth. The film opened to excitement, strong audience turnout, and positive reception, quickly positioning itself as a Valentine’s season favourite before the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 forced nationwide cinema closures.
Despite the shortened cinema run, the film’s influence remained undeniable.
The film’s impact was later affirmed on one of Nollywood’s most notable stages. After earning five major nominations, Dear Affy went on to secure a win at the 12th edition of the Best of Nollywood Awards, held on December 5, 2020, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The ceremony, co-hosted by Tana Adelana and Debo Macaroni, with Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi as Chief Host, became a night of celebration and validation for the creative minds behind the film.
For Wale Muraina, the moment was particularly significant. Walking away from the event with two awards from two different projects he was involved in, the night underscored his growing influence and consistency as a producer shaping stories that resonate with Nigerian audiences.
Speaking after the ceremony, Muraina expressed heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians for embracing Dear Affy, noting that the recognition reaffirmed the importance of creating films that blend entertainment with authenticity. He described the win as a reflection of collective effort, from the cast and crew to the audiences who continued to support the film despite the challenges of its release year.
Beyond Dear Affy, Muraina’s career reflects a deliberate commitment to storytelling. His work spans short films and feature productions such as Street Kid, as well as his involvement in the 2018 blockbuster Lara and the Beat, projects that highlight his versatility and dedication to expanding Nollywood’s creative range.
Today, Wale Muraina stands as a producer whose impact goes beyond individual titles. Through thoughtful collaborations, strong narrative choices, and a clear understanding of audience connection, he continues to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of Nollywood, proving that even when circumstances disrupt the moment, powerful stories will always find their place.
