African Music is going mainstream, so I want to be an inspiration to future artists and help achieve their dreams -Duprie

“A goal that I hold dear is to be an inspiration to future artists and help achieving their dreams any way I possibly can. What matters to me the most as an artist is to be able to effectively tell stories through my music so how people relate to my music will be an indicator of that goal. As someone that isn’t bound by trends or set standards, I would like to have a well-established audience in all the genres of music that I make within the next 5 to 10years” – Duprie.

Although the Cameroonian music industry has been experiencing some vibrancy over the years, Duprie does not see it like that. He believes the music industry can do so much better than having only a few of their music artiste being true to themselves.

Cameroonian born Damen Priestley Dume known professionally as Duprie is an advocate of good music, as he believes that in the next 5-10 years, Afro Music would have taken its place in the mainstream, globally. So, he sees the importance and need for African music acts especially from Francophone Africa to create our own unique sounds, pushing the gospel all over the world.

A blend of traditional influences, contemporary culture and pervasive Afropop has been channeled by Cameroonian musicians into a unique sound. Strong vocals and melodious tunes with lyrics in English, French, Pidgin, and ethnic languages are a common feature of this genre, and those who are thriving are those who have embraced the trend.

Better known by his mononym Damen, Duprie is a Singer/Songwriter and the Co-founder of Damrex Records which launched its operations in July of 2018.

Having been in the music scene since 2010 primarily as a songwriter in the Afro-Pop and Afro-RnB genres, With the future of African music as his primary focus, Duprie is on a mission to further improve the representation of African music on a global scale by living up to its standards as a source of professionalism and quality in the music industry for Afro-music, commonly as well as other genres worldwide.  Through his conscious music, Duprie aims to inspire his peers to see their music as a platform for expressing a distinctly Cameroonian identity in rap, both through sound and storytelling that speaks specifically to the locals.

Africa’s biggest musical acts have been quietly uniting the continent one song at a time with collaborations that create music that resonates in the hearts and ears of the people irrespective of language or region.

This artist is a firm believer that collaboration is key in this mission, as he mentioned that he is deliberately working towards gaining global appreciation and awareness in the music industry by collaborating with his major musical inspirations, “In terms of who I would most like to collaborate with that is a tough to say. These are all very talented artists and I like to be versatile with my music. The most accurate response is all of them. These artists are unique in their own ways and collaborating with every one of them will have a unique experience and outcome”.
