Awka—THE Social Democratic Party, SDP, has disowned the candidate of the party for Anambra Central senatorial zone, Mr. Tony Chukwuelue, who filed a petition against the declaration of Senator Uche Ekwunife as the winner of the February 23 poll, saying that Chukwuelue was not a member of the party.
At a press conference addressed by officials of the seven local government chairmen in the zone, the party said Chukwuelue was not a candidate of SDP for the 2019 election and wondered why he should file a petition in the name of the party against the winner of the election, Senator Ekwunife.
SDP vice chairman for Anambra Central, Mrs. Angela Nwaneme, who spoke on behalf of the local government chairmen, said the party had previously obtained a court order restraining those who nominated Chukwuelue from parading themselves as officials of the party.
The statement by the SDP officials read: “Our attention has been drawn to the purported election petition No. EPT/AW/01/2019) filed against Senator Uche Ekwunife, by Chukwuelue through his lawyer, Mr. C. N. Nwagbo.
“In the said petition, which was filed at the National Assembly/Legislative Houses Election Petition Tribunal, Awka, Tony Chukwuelue purports to be the SDP candidate for the Anambra Central Senatorial election in the 2019 general elections held on the 23rd day of February, 2019.
“As local government chairmen and state vice chairman, central, of SDP in all the seven LGAs of Anambra Central, and knowing fully well what transpired in our party in the period leading to this election, we feel a sense of duty and obligation to set the record straight and correct the false claim by Tony Chukwuelue that he was a candidate of SDP for Anambra Central senatorial zone.
“The truth is that Tony Chukwuelue was never a candidate of SDP in the Anambra Central senatorial election and he knows it.
“He was never a member of SDP in Anambra and as a non member, he cannot be a candidate of our party as provided in our party constitution.
“SDP never registered Tony Chukwuelue as a member; neither did it conduct any primary election to elect him to fly the flag of the party for the 2019 Anambra Central senatorial District election.”
