The Coalition of Northern Youths Democratic Forces has called on the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the Northcentral zone in order to consolidate the party’s hold in the zone.
In a statement issued in Kaduna, the group said from its massive contribution to the party at the recently concluded closed presidential elections, it’s only just for the zone to be so rewarded.
The statement signed by the Coordinator of the group, Yahaya Lisma, said zoning the speaker’s seat to the zone would promote equity, fairness and balance in the political structure of the country.
It said since the return to Democratic rule in 1999, the North Central zone that has not produced the speaker for the Green Chamber.
The coalition said already, the Northwest has produced the president, in the person of President Muhammadu Buhari, while the Southwest has produced Vice president President Yemi Osinbajo.
Lisma noted that with the Northeast at the forefront of being given the position of the Senate President because of its contributions to the party’s victory at the polls, the North Central should naturally be considered for the speaker.
“This is because the Northcentral produced the third highest votes during the presidential election, the first and second being Northwest and Northeast. These two regions are already accommodated, so North Central is the next.
“We also understand that some people are making frantic moves for the position of the speaker to be zoned to the southwest. But we want to caution the party not to thread that path because the Southwest is already taken care of,” the coalition said.
The coalition said when the position is zoned to the north, members from the North Central can choose among them a ranking and qualified lawmaker to be the speaker.
