ABUJA- Former Vice President and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has joined other chieftains of the party to felicitate with governors elected on the platform of the party in the supplementary polls which held yesterday in some parts of the country.
The former Vice President in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists on Sunday, saluted the resilience of the winners and the people of their respective states.
The statement read in part: “The victories of the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party in both Sokoto and Benue states is an acknowledgement from the Nigerian people that we are the only truly national party in Nigeria.
“I congratulate His Excellency, Governor Aminu Tambuwal on his re-election and I assure the good people of Sokoto state that they have made the right decision that will see them continue on the path to peace, progress and prosperity.
“I also congratulate His Excellency, Governor Samuel Ortom whom the good people of Benue State have rightfully handed their mandate for the next four years.
“I congratulate the Peoples Democratic Party and all our members on these gains. Our party is the true bastion of democracy and we should be encouraged by these victories. With unity within our midst, we will together continue to extend the boundaries of democracy and shrink the space occupied by tyranny.”
Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara has also congratulated the duo, describing their elections as a reflection of the wishes of the people.
“I congratulate their Excellencies, Governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State and Samuel Ortom of Benue state on their victories at the supplementary elections. Your victories were true reflections of the wishes of the people & confirmation of their love & appreciation of your respective administrations’ successes,” he tweeted.
On his part, the lawmaker representing Bayelsa East, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce also took to the social media to laud the emergence of the party’s flag bearer in Sokoto and Bauchi state.
He wrote: “Congratulations to my good friend, Governor Tambuwal. Your successful re-election is proof that you have served well and thus earned another four years from the good people of Sokoto state. To God be the glory!”
In yet another tweet, the lawmaker wrote: “Congratulations my brother, Senator Bala Mohammed, governor-elect, Bauchi state. You achieved this in the midst of intimidation and oppression. I am very proud of you. It is a new day and renewed hope for the great people of Bauchi state.”
Mohammed, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, polled a total of 6,376 votes to edge incumbent governor, Mohammed Abubakar who got 5,117 votes in the supplementary election.
Returning Officer, Professor Kyari Mohammed however didn’t make a return, citing results of the Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area which is case pending in court.
