Prominent sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State, cutting across the political class, traditional institutions, the academia, and cultural groups gathered recently to celebrate and extol one of their own, 89-year-old Dr. Akpan Abasi Ikoiwak for his contributions to the development of the state and humanity.
The event was the unveiling and public presentation of the book, Flashes of Oratory, held at Utimanik Suites in Eket Local Government Area.
The guests included wife of the late U.J Esuene and former Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Helen Esuene, Amb. Assam Assam, the Atta of Ekid, Chief Nduese Essien, and Senator Etang Umoyo, Chief Assam Usoro and Governor Udom Emmanuel and his deputy, Mr. Moses Ekpo.
Governor Udom Emmanuel who extolled Dr. Ikoiwak for his contributions in the service of humanity said: “Let me say here that your greatest contribution to our nation will be those years you spent as speech writer. To be a speech writer means you must know the mind of the person you are writing the speech for. It is a gift…I commend you for putting your thoughts and speeches together. Let me also celebrate your strength. I don’t know how many people today launch books at 89. Let me celebrate him today for his esteemed intellect, and presence of mind to chronicle this great and inspiring book.”
In his keynote speech, Ambassador Assam Assam, SAN, described the author as a person to be emulated in character, integrity, carriage, devotion to his family and penchant for hard work.
Reviewing the 377-page book, Senator Etang Umoyo observed that the cover heralded the quality in content, simplicity of the design and, especially the title which is very instructive and adds to the general advantages utilised by the author to make the book an eye catcher and a companion to book lovers.
“Dr. Ikoiwak’s collection of speeches is indeed a unique book. Apart from providing good guide and models for effective speech-making, its richness in diverse subject matters, well researched contents covering areas of governance, leadership, educational career, building expertise, writing skills, church and cultism, oil politics, multinational companies and traditional leadership, make it a good reference book on diverse subject areas for other writers.”
