The International Maritime Bureau, IMB, Piracy Reporting Centre, last week said pirates in Nigeria chased and fired at an LNG tanker, 26 nautical miles off the Bonny Coast.

The report added, however, that the nine pirate attempts to board the tanker upon approaching it repeatedly was unsuccessful as the crew turned on the vessel’s emergency alarm and mustered at the citadel, while the vessel increased its speed and engaged in evasive manoeuvres, which frustrated the pirates into abandoning their operation as the crew and vessel reportedly sailed into safety.

The Piracy Reporting Centre noted that although there has been a record-low number of successful hijacks in the Gulf of Guinea region this year, the piracy threats have persisted.
