Youths in their hundreds had trooped into major streets before they marched towards the main gates of Government House, where the protest nearly turned violent, but for the quick intervention of leadership of the association.
Adamawa State chapter of CAN had called all its members across the state to come out for a peaceful protest march.
The protest was planned to start from Saints Theresa Catholic Church to the Government House. However, on reaching the Police Roundabout near the Police Headquarters, few metres from the Government House, a team of policemen started throwing teargas on the protesters.
The protesters scampered for safety, while some sustained injuries.
The state CAN Chairman, Bishop Stephen Mamza, and other Christian leaders pleaded with youths not to react to the Police action.
Bishop Mamza said he had got the Police approval for the protest, but was surprised to see a Police team sent to disrupt the peaceful march.
Contacted, spokesman to the state Police Command, Abubakar Othman, said he could not hear the questions. When the call was later repeated, the line was switched off.
