The race for the presidential ticket of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was last night being reset with the imminent defection of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State to the opposition party.
Ahead of his declaration, Tambuwal issued what was like a departure blister on the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration in Abuja, with a rallying cry to Nigerians to reject what he described as “prison-yard democracy.”
Tambuwal’s declaration for the PDP, Vanguard gathered, is to be preceded by a rally in Sokoto today.
The decision to move over to PDP followed consultations among his associates.
The team, Vanguard gathered, prepared its report over the last weekend and was expected to submit its report yesterday.
“Whatever the report, they are moving tomorrow,” a source familiar with the development said.
Tambuwal’s predecessor, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Vanguard gathered, is not moving along and may have succumbed to pressures and pleas from Presidency officials who have been meeting with him over the last one week.
However, a significant proportion of the National Assembly delegation from the state and more than two-third of the State House of Assembly are, however, expected to make the cross over to the PDP.
Tambuwal’s entry into the presidential race is expected to immediately gain bounce as it would immediately resurrect his nationwide structure which he had nurtured over the last four years. That structure has as its backbone serving and former members of the National Assembly with Speaker Yakubu Dogara believed to be a strategic partner.
