NNEWI—GOVERNOR Willie Obiano of Anambra state has ordered the immediate recovery of the body of forty five (45) year- old Mr. Ugochukwu Ofiaeli who was allegedly drowned in a flash flood at Nnewi at the weekend.
Ofiaeli who hailed from Egbu-Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, was alleged to have been carried away by flood last weekend along Okwuani- Ezi Ogwugwu Road, Nnewi and had not been seen since then.
The governor had earlier visited Ofiaeli’s home where he met with his family and reassured them that government will find the missing person dead or alive as he has given directive for commencement of search activities for the body.
Speaking at the scene of the incident, Governor Obiano said a joint team comprising men of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Brigade, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the State Ministry of Works would join the search.
The governor also directed the Ministry of Works to redesign the road and create appropriate water channels to guard against a recurrence of such incidents.
He also paid a condolence visit to the family of Pastor Salvation Samuel of Amawbia community who lost their fourteen year old daughter, Ebubechukwu in a flash flood around Landmark Hotel Amawbia /Nibo last week.
In his speech, Obiano appealed to the people to be patient whenever they encounter flash flood and allow it to subside no matter how small they may seem, noting that it is more profitable to lose time than to lose lives.
Obiano later visited the scene of the flood that carried the 14 year- old girl and ordered proper digging up of the water channel to avoid future occurrence. Already, a swamp buggie already deployed by the state government was digging up trees and clearing a natural water channel along the road.
