ASABA—AGAINST reports in a section of the media that the Stephen Keshi Stadium collapsed, the Delta State government has said it was the water tank besides the swimming pool inside the stadium that collapsed.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Patrick Ukah, in a statement, Sunday, asked Nigerians, especially Deltans, to disregard online reports that Stephen Keshi Stadium, venue of the ongoing African Athletics Championship in Asaba, collapsed on Thursday.

Noting that the water tank “is a distance from the main bowl,” he expressed surprise that “any sane person can write that the stadium collapsed whereas the venue was full to capacity and all activities for the day were successfully completed.”

Ukah cautioned those involved in writing falsehood to desist from such acts, adding that it was capable of causing panic among citizens.

He said the championship continues as scheduled, adding: “All relevant government agencies have long mobilised to the location to make an alternative arrangement to ensure continued supply of water to various service points and needs on the stadium premises.”
