ABUJA- THE Federal Government has inaugurated a 7-man presidential committee on the recent flood disaster in Ogun and Kastina States in view of proffering solution.

The inauguration was done by the Minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman Adamu, in Abuja.

Adamu also charged members of the committee to make a thorough assessment of the effects caused by the disaster and take records of those who died and survived including the quantity of relief materials demanded to assist victims, and according to him the committee will submit its report on Tuesday August 14, 2018.

Chairman of the committee is Executive Director of National Water Resources Institute, Prof. Emmanuel Adanu, Secretary, Director River Basin Authority, and other members are Director of Irrigation and Drainage, Engr M.O Offie; Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Engr Mustapha Maihaj; Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, John Shamonda; and Managing Director Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, Mr Olufemi Odumosu.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was deeply saddened by the loss of innocent lives and property to the flood disaster that occurred in Ogun and Kastina States, therefore directed the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA to access the level of damage, impact on human lives and others.

“This 7-man Presidential Committee being inaugurated today is charged with the responsibility to make in-depth assessment of the disaster, take records of the victims and ascertain the relief interventions that would be required so as to provide needed succour and support to those affected by the disaster.

“They are to work assiduously and diligently to submit an interim report on Tuesday August 14, 2018.

“The Chairman is Executive Director of National Water Resources Institute, Prof. Emmanuel Adanu, Secretary, Director River Basin Authority, and other members are Director Irrigation and Drainage, Engr M.O Offie, Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Engr Mustapha Maihaj, Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, John Shamonda, and Managing Director Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, Mr Olufemi Odumosu”, he said.

In his response, the Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Engr Mustapha Maihaj, promised that the committee would do all within its ability to proffer solutions to the recurrent flood disaster across the country, and assured that the committee will work and deliver its report on the stipulated date.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Dr Musa Ibrahim, said the Presidential Committee would be supported to achieve its mission within the time frame given to it.
