ABUJA- FOLLOWING what they described as abrupt adjournment of plenary till September 26 last week by Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, there are strong moves by Senators of the All Progressives Congress, APC to force the Senate to resume and attend to some national issues
President Muhammadu Buhari flanked by APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, Senate Majority Leader Sen Ahmad Lawal and others after meeting with APC Caucus in the Senate at the Presidential Villa Wednesday Night in Abuja.
Again this backdrop there was apprehension yesterday at the National Assembly entrance as about 20 Senators on the platform of the APC gathered at the Senate wing for about 15 minutes before heading for Aso Rock for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senators who were led to the Villa in a 32- seater Coastal Bus by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters ( Senate) , Senator Ita Enang include the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan , former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume and Senator Umar Kurfi .
Others were Senators Abdullahi Gumel, Aliyu Wammako, Hope Uzodinma, Ajayi Boroffice, Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, Danjuma Goje, Abdullahi Yahaya , Sunny Ogbuoji, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi etc .
Panic caused by the presence of the Senators may not be unconnected with insinuation making the rounds that the APC senators may make a surprise move against the leadership of the Senate headed by Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu.
It would be recalled that the President of the Senate , Bukola Saraki, defected from APC to PDP on Tuesday , exactly a week after 14 senators on the platform of the party did same, fueling speculations that the remaining 53 APC senators may want to move for leadership change.
The rules of the Senate however leaves the power to reconvene the chamber in the hands of either the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Senate Rule Book 2015 as amended reads: “Whenever the Senate stands adjourned either to a date fixed by the rule of the Senate or to a date determined in accordance with paragraph (1) of his Rule and it is represented by the Leaders of the political Parties in the Senate to the President of the Senate that the Public interest requires that the Senate should meet on an earlier or a later date or time than that on which it stands adjourned, the President of the Senate may give notice accordingly, and the Senate shall meet on the date and at the time stated in the notice.”
