LAGOS—AIR Force Institute of Technology, AFIT, has secured the approval of National Universities Commission, NUC, to commence operation.

The approval came against the backdrop of assent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the bill, which created the university, which would start its degree programmes in the 2018/2019 academic year.

Commandant of the Institute, Air Vice Marshal Cletus Nwannebuike Udeagulu, said the assent to the bill offered AFIT the opportunity to compete favourably with other specialised Institutions globally.

Nwannebuike said the university occupied a unique place in the educational landscape of Nigeria, being one of the few to offer training in aerospace and aviation related courses up to postgraduate level.

He further reiterated his desire to see AFIT become rated among the first ten universities in Nigeria and indeed Africa.

His simple, yet inspiring vision is “To transform AFIT into a world class institution and first choice for the study of aerospace and defence engineering”.

To achieve this vision, he intends to create conducive teaching and learning environment, deploy globally competitive curriculum, build a strong team as well as partner with relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.

The commandant also unveiled programme for the convocation ceremony of the university slated for July 27, 2018.

According to him, the convocation starts with a lecture, titled: Civil-Military Partnership: Towards A Thriving Aviation Industry’’, which will be delivered on July 26, 2018 by the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika.

The Institute is also set to issue certificates and award diplomas to over 200 students in different programmes and courses of study during the convocation.

Also as part of the drive to increase student population, the school is set to administer Post UTME examinations for its intending students.

AFIT plans to provide 100% on-campus accommodation for students and staff as well as state of the art lecture theatres and laboratories, including different aircraft models/live aircraft for aviation training.

It is instructive to note that AFIT is already an approved training organisation by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority NCAA and thus it aims to continue with its license courses to prepare fresh graduates for immediate integration into the aviation industry.
