AWKA—A 4-storey building under construction at Owelle-Aja layout, Obosi in Idemili North local government area of Anambra State collapsed in the early hours of yesterday.
The building was said to have collapsed around 7am when the workers were yet to resume at the site.
According to a resident in the area, the building originally had foundation for two-storey before the owner later decided to add two extra floors, adding that before the collapse, there were several cracks in the building.
He said: “People hardly build such multi-storey buildings here. What are common here are two-storey buildings. Besides, the building has been under the rain and sun for years which was enough to weaken the foundation.”
Chairman of Landlords Association, Chief Chuka Chukwudebelu said the collapse might not be unconnected with the use of substandard materials, coupled with the fact that the building was abandoned for a long time before construction resumed.
He said: “The landlord was not in a hurry to complete the building, probably because of inadequate funds. ”
