Sylvester Ikuejamoye, the President of Nigeria Para Swimming Federation (NPSF), on Monday in Abuja said his mission at the federation was to develop the sport at the grassroots level.
Ikuejamoye said that the para sports are the sports to reckon with in Nigeria and they need the grassroots to develop.
“The para sports have over the years won medals for Nigeria. Therefore, there is the need to enhance their growth, especially para swimming,’’ he said.
Para swimming became a national federation sport in Nigeria some years ago and its first outing was the 2015 African Games in Congo where it won two medals.
“My vision is to expand the horizon of the sport by going to the grassroots to discover as many talents as possible.
“In para swimming, there are lots of medals which can put Nigeria on top of the medals table at international championships.
“Our mission therefore is to work towards getting the best for the sport and to go that way means we have to go to the grassroots to develop the sport.
“As a federation, we will try to organise as many national open championships as possible to encourage athletes’ participation in the game,’’ Ikuejamoye said.
He then appealed to state governments and multi-nationals to support the sport by providing swimming facilities.(NAN)
