APC clears Edo local council polls

…as Ogbemudia’s dautgher, others declared winners

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN-CITY—EGHE Ogbemudia, daughter of the late former governor of the old Bendel State, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia and 17 other candidates of the All Progressives Congress,  APC, in the just concluded Saturday local government elections in Edo State, were yesterday declared victorious by Edo State Independent National Electoral Commission, EDSIEC.

From the results declared by the Chairman of EDSIEC about 2p.m., yesterday, the  APC won all the 18 chairmanship and councilorship seats in the 192 wards of the state, defeating nine other political parties that participated in the exercise.

The major opposition party in the state, the PDP, boycotted the exercise, citing what it described as its  suit against the constitution of EDSIEC and other issues as reason for their boycott.

Meanwhile, Governor Godwin Obaseki has congratulated the winners,  assuring that the state government will collaborate with the new council executives in strengthening democracy at the local level.

Similarly, immediate past governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has  expressed sympathy for the PDP in the state for opting to boycott the council elections, saying that the party accepted defeat without a blow.

Oshiomhole who stated this at his Iyamho country home, said the implication of the PDP´s decision was that “They will not ask for votes from Edo people come 2019 since council election is now too small for them.

“I laughed when I read the PDP saying that they are going to court to contest the constitutionality of  EDSIEC and other issues that have to do with the council elections. That is just an excuse to tell their members that they are still alive but they are dead.

“You can see people are celebrating democracy at the grassroots. Our people are more interested in local elections because that is the man they can see every day and that is why you saw that people were keen to vote.”

Meanwhile, announcing the results, Chairman of EDSIEC, Prof. Stanley Orobator, said the Certificate of Return will be presented to the winners today.
