Tricycle operators attack court, environs over its decision

The tricycle operators known as “Keke Napep” unleashed violence within the premises of the National Industrial Court, NIC, Lagos when what transpired in court was not in their favour.

It was gathered that the tricycle operators under their union had instituted a suit, praying the court for an order recognising their body in Lagos State.

Joined as respondents are the Minister of Labour and Lagos State government.

As the defendants stepped out of the gate of the court, the riders who stood at distance laid ambush on the people, throwing stones, they stabbed some people with broken bottles, and engaged in fist-fight.

It was the swift intervention of the court Chief Security Officer that prevented them from entering the court premises. As they were shouting ‘if they born you well, come out of the gate’.

Later, the suspected tricyclist who vandalised cars later returned to the gate, mounting pressure on the gate. One of the injured persons was brought into the court premises in pool of his own blood with torn clothes. He was later taken to a nearby hospital.

It was gathered that they instituted the suit against Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Minister for Labour and Employment, Registrar of Trade Unions, Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, Comrade Agustine Apeh, Attorney General of Lagos State, Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State as first to eight defendant respectively.

They wanted court in the suit delineated NICN/LA/504/2016 to among other things nullify the registration of the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria.

The claimants also wanted the court to order seventh and eight defendant, (Attorney General of Lagos State and Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State) to recognise the association.

The claimants are Incorporated Trustees of Tricycle Owners & Operators Association of Nigeria with its officers, Comrade Joseph Odusanya, Alhaji Ganiyu Dauda and Alhaji Shakirudeen Arowoye.

The court had fixed March 20, 2018 for further hearing in the matter.
