State police, panacea to internal security challenges —Retired DIG

By Emmanuel Ayungbe

UYO—Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Udom Ekpoudom (retd), has aligned himself with the demand by state governors for the establishment of state police, saying it was the only way out of the prevailing internal security challenges in the country.

Ekpoudom made his position known while interacting with members of the State Working Committee, SWC, of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, in his office.

He said he was aligning with the position by the 36 state governors  because it is the best way of addressing the rising internal security challenges bedevilling the nation in recent times.

The former police boss explained that since state governors are constitutionally empowered to create and manage internal security in their states, they will be able to identify flash points easily and deal with them promptly before they escalate.

“If we have state police in all the states of the federation, it will allow indigenes of the states to be recruited into the force and remain in the state to tackle security challenges that may arise,” he said.
