By Chioma Onuegbu

Eket—THE Akwa Ibom State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has faulted reports that the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, promised that the party will award automatic tickets to serving members of the National Assembly.

The state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ini Ememobong, in a statement, yesterday in Uyo, said his verification showed that such report did not emanate from the party.

Ememobong therefore, urged members of the party who intends to aspire for the National Assembly seats in 2019 not to rely on the misleading report, adding that the party’s decision and actions are always strictly guided by its constitution.

His words: “The social media space has recently been awash with a story conveying the decision of the National Chairman of our party, Prince Secondus to award automatic tickets or right of first refusal to serving members of the National Assembly.

“Expectedly, the said news item received knocks from both members of the party and the general citizenry. Many persons reached out to me seeking to verify or contradict the story.

“In line with my statutorily assigned duties, I reached out to the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, who informed me and I verily believe him, that to his knowledge that there was no such promise and that any reliance on such alleged promise will be deeply misleading as all politics is local.

“It is worthy of further note that the said misleading news item did not emanate from the office of the National Chairman of the party or from the National Publicity Secretary, who possess the official channels of communication of the national leadership of our party, but was rather floated online by a media aide of an intended beneficiary of this wishful thinking.

“Furthermore, the import of such automatic ticket will mean that there will be no nomination for candidates seeking election into the National Assembly across the country, except in constituencies where the national legislator is not a member of our party.”

He stressed that since inception, it has been the culture of the PDP as a responsible political party to conduct credible primaries for the purpose of selecting candidates for all offices, adding that nothing exists contemporarily to suggest that the party was intending to negate or deviate from this time tested process of candidate selection.
