UMUAHIA—IN his effort to assist the less privileged in the society to acquire quality education, the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, NAU, Awka, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku has introduced work-and-study programme for indigent brilliant undergraduates of the university.

The programme enables the beneficiaries to work for five hours every week and earn N10, 000 monthly, to argument their academic expenses.

Prof. Ahaneku, who disclosed this in Awka, while addressing the University’s 2017/2018 matriculation ceremony of about 7,000 fresh students of the institution, announced that 76 students benefited from the programme last session, but said there was opportunity for as much as 120 brilliant indigent students for the work-and-study scheme.

“To benefit from the scheme, such students must attain a cumulative grade point average, CGPA, of 2.50. The university administration has also put in place group personal insurance scheme for the benefit of the students,” Prof Ahaneku said.

The VC, however, warned the new students to shun vices, such as examination malpractices, certificate forgery and cultism, saying they could lead to  expulsion and jail terms.

Ahaneku said the university takes the academic, security and welfare of the students very serious and urged the students to reciprocate and enjoy the University’s good gestures by working hard and obeying the rules and regulations guiding their conduct.
