Factional APC queries el-Rufai, suspends his aide, commissioner

By Ben Agande

Kaduna—A faction of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kaduna State has queried Governor Nasir el-Rufai and also suspended his Political Adviser, Mallam Uba Sani; Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Abdu Kwari and the acting state secretary of the party, Yahaya Pate, signposting a deepening of the divide in the state chapter of the party, which had been in crisis since 2015.

However, in a swift reaction, Governor el-Rufai dismissed the query issued him by the faction as a non-issue, saying he was “ready to send political traders into retirement and will not be swayed by their drowning antics.”

The faction, which unveiled a new secretariat, gave Governor el-Rufai 48 hours to answer the query, while Sani and Pate were suspended for 18 months.

While the Ali Akilu Road secretariat of the party is occupied by the faction loyal to Government House, the 11 Sambo Road office, which was unveiled yesterday, belonged to the Restoration Group.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Shuaibu Wada, who spoke to newsmen at the new secretariat, said he was the leader recognised by the constitution of the party, in acting capacity, until a new leader is elected.

Alhaji Wada was the deputy chairman to Bala Bantex, who was picked by Governor el-Rufai as deputy in 2015.

However, Wada did not become the acting chairman, as a new person was brought in, an action that divided the party.

The Restoration Group is led by Alhaji Tijani Ramalan and Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi; there is also the Government House faction, which occupies the secretariat of the party; and the APC-Akida faction, led by Senator Shehu Sani.

Gov el-Rufai reacts

In a statement issued by el-Rufai’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, the governor said the government remained committed to delivering services to the people of the state and will not “pay heed to the attention-seeking gambits of desperate politicians, who have steadily been demystified.”

He warned that rascally actions being undertaken by these “traders” in the hope of getting a lifeline from reconciliation moves will not be rewarded.
