Education gets priority in Plateau 2018 budget

Jos – In order to revamp the decaying education sector, the Plateau State government has allocated 16.92% of its 2018 budget to the sector with the aim of completing ongoing infrastructural projects in the public schools.

The allocation being higher compared to what is allocated to health, agriculture, commerce, tourism, water resources, energy and sanitation and others except administration; works and transport is a departure from what was obtained in the past where such attention was not given to the sector.

The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Finance, Mr. Sani Yahaya gave the disclosure while giving a breakdown of the year’s budget as well as a roadmap on how monies will be raised to fund the budget.

He said, “The administration has committed the sum of N11, 930,062,607.00 to the education sub-sector, this represent 16.92% of the capital estimate and the amount would be used for the completion of the ongoing renovation and construction of Secondary Schools and provision of infrastructures at the Tertiary institutions.”

Apart from education, the highest allocation of N18,833,700,000.00 representing 26.71% is given to Works and Transport, administration has N15,025,652,684.00 representing 21.31% while health has the sum of N4,352,033,311.00 representing 6.17%; water resources, energy and sanitation has N3,582,100,000.00 representing 5.07%; commerce and industry has N2,861,125,000.00 representing 4.05%.

Agriculture and rural development has N4,075,633,000.00 representing 5.78%; lands, housing and urban development was allocated N4,064,520,488.00 representing 5.76%; tourism, culture and hospitality has N354,900,000.00; Information and Communication has N1,379,928,013.00; women, youths and sports development has N1,153,500,00.00 representing 1.63% while Judiciary is allocated N1,021,950,000.00.

To finance the budget, the Permanent Secretary maintained, “We will explore all necessary avenues to source for funds to finance the budget, we implore on our citizens to cooperate with revenue authorities and the tax force in the payment of their taxes and other levies.”
