165 trained on mechanised farming in Abia

UMUAHIA—AS part of the effort to encourgage and update farmers in mechanized agriculture in Abia State, a total of 165 people, including rural women and youths have received training in different types of modern agricultural methods from three prominet agricultural institutes in the country.

Drawn from the six local government areas of Abia Central Senatorial District, 80 of the beneficiaries were trained at National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Abia State; 65 were trained at the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State; while the remaining 20 were trained for two weeks at the National Centre for Agriculture Mechanization in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The beneficiaries whose training was sponsored by Ochendo Foundation, the empowerment and scholarship umbrella of Senator Theodore Orji representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, according the Rt. Hon. Chidiebere Nwoko, the immediate Legislative Aide to the Senator, would be empowered soon with the necessary tools to enable them put what they learned into practice.

Vanguard learned that they would be given cash and mechanized equipments, farming tools as well as other farm implements aimed at helping achieve the Government’s programme of food sufficiency in the country.

Nwoko who is the Abia State Commissioner for Public Utlilty, said that Senator Orji decided to send the beneficiaries to the trainng programme because he wants them to be exposed to more mechanized method of farming which could make successful modern farmers.

He explained that Senator Orji was determined to give his constiuents the best he could afford to ensure that they are succeesful in any of their endeavours and make decent living.

Besides the 165 beneficiaries of the agricultural training, Nwoko said that over 50 members of the Senator’s constituents would be give tricycles on the same day those trained agricultural mechanization would be empowered.

Nwoko also spoke of the performance of the Senator at the National Assembly, saying he has done very well, having sponsored over 10 bills and moved many motions on the floor of the Red Chambers.

“If there is any Senator who has done well and is qualified for a second term, it is Senator T. A. Orji. He has done well in terms of motions, bills and representation”, Nwoko said.
